Toronto: A vibrant international financial services centre

Cluster Description

The Canadian Financial Services sector is largely focused in the Toronto region, Canada’s financial hub and the second largest financial centre in North America. The city’s downtown financial district is home to 40 per cent of all financial services headquarters employment in Canada including banks, investment firms, pension funds (e.g., Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, and OMERS), insurance companies (e.g., Manulife Financial, Sun Life Financial, Great West LifeCo), and the headquarters of Canada’s five largest banks (i.e., RBC, TD Bank, CIBC, BMO, and Scotiabank). This vast network of financial institutions is supported by a vibrant ecosystem that includes many of Canada’s top lawyers, accountants, administrators, technology firms and academic institutions. This combination has established Toronto as not only one of the soundest banking systems in the world, but also as a growing centre for FinTech firms, whose technology supports and promotes innovation within the financial services industry. Join this session to learn more about Toronto’s competitive advantage in this sector and its strengths in talent, diversity and innovation.
